Obituary for Jimmie Donald Vickers

Jimmie Donald Vickers
Jimmy D. Vickers, age 89, of Virginia Beach died January 19, 2018. Jim was born in Clovis, NM, the third of four children of Robert L. and Estelle Vickers on September 6, 1928. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Eloise, two sons, Mitchell (his wife Barbara) and Todd, three grandchildren, Larry, Joshua, and Leigh Anne, and four great grandchildren, all of Virginia Beach, and one brother, Bill and wife Margaret, of Lake Havasu City, AZ and many nieces and nephews and their children. He was predeceased by his sister, Frances Rodriguez, of Dallas, and his brother Leroy, of Lubbock, TX.

Jim served in the army in Japan and Korea, 1950-52, during the Korean War. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Architecture from Texas Tech in 1959. He immediately was hired by the US Army Corps of Engineers in Tulsa, OK, as a Civil Engineer working on the Arkansas River Navigational Project. In 1967, he went to work for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command in Norfolk.

When Jim retired, he and Eloise traveled extensively throughout the US (including Alaska) and Canada in their Chevy Suburban and travel trailer for several years with trips from two to six months at a time.

Jim will always be remembered as a loving husband, father and grandfather, neighbor and friend. He loved woodworking and working with his hands. He was a jack-of-all-trades and enjoyed helping others. For many years he was the go-to guy in the neighborhood. Conversely, in the last few years of his life, the neighbors were always there to help him.

Jim has been an active member of Thalia Lynn Baptist Church for 50 years. His Memorial Service will be held there Saturday, January 27, at 11:00 am. A reception will follow. Friends may greet the family at 10:00 am or at the reception. Condolences may be offered at www.FamilyChoiceFunerals.com.
