Richard Shafanda, 93, formerly of New Hyde Park, N.Y., passed away Tuesday, March 14th, 2017 in Virginia Beach, VA.
Mr. Shafanda was born Saturday, July 21st, 1923 to the late John and Bertha Shafanda. He served our country proudly in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Pacific Theatre, on the LST 246. Each year he and his shipmates met and enjoyed meeting one another in a different state for a reunion. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Richard’s love of cars turned into a career as an auto mechanic until his retirement. When he wasn’t serving our country or working on cars, he loved fishing in the waters of Long Island and being with his family. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend. He will be deeply missed.
Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Eleanor, of 66 years; daughters, Janice Gimmi and husband Michael, Lenore Hellis and husband Michael; grandsons, Michael Gimmi Jr., and Julian Gimmi; and a host of extended family members, friends and loved ones.
A Memorial Mass and Celebration of Life was held on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at the Sullivan House, Virginia Beach, VA. Military honors will be held this summer at his final resting place at Calverton National Cemetery, Long Island, NY.
